Torquato Tasso submitted his epic poem to the trial of five influential experts in letters. He shared in part the scruples of the distinguished scholars, who had expressed moralistic critics. In response to this review, the poet wrote, in 1576, Allegory. To the literary scruples soon joined the religious one, which took the form of real feelings of persecution. To test his orthodoxy in the Christian faith, tasso voluntarily submitted himself to the court of the Inquisition of Ferrara, which acquitted him. The persecution mania became more and more obvious: one day, considering himself spied on by a servant, he threw against him a knife.
Duke Alfonso imprisoned Torquato Tasso in the convent of San Francesco, but he fled and, in 1578, he went to his sister in Sorrento, announcing his own death, to see her reaction: he revealed his true identity to the sister only after observing the reaction of the woman that was really grieved. This episode also highlights the author's mental disturbance, which showed signs of insecurity. In 1579 he returned to Ferrara; because he do not found at the court the warm welcome he expected, tasso gave in outburst during the third wedding of Alfonso II with Margherita Gonzaga. The Duke then locked him in the Hospital St. Anne, in the famous cell called from then "of Tasso", where he remained for seven years.
