List of Precautions For Identity Theft

You may not realize just how easy it is for someone to steal your personal data. Thieves can use techniques ranging from the low tech "shoulder surfing" where they look over your shoulder when you type in a security code to sophisticated computer hacking which requires a great deal of skill. So, here are a list of precautions for identity theft.

First of all, whenever you have personal or financial data on a piece of paper, don't just throw it away. Shred it! Even tearing it up offers no security as thieves don't mind going to the trouble of putting the paper back together again. Criminals get access to your data by "dumpster diving" or going to the local dump and scrounging through the trash.

Next, if you get a letter for a pre-approved credit card, don't just throw it away. Someone else might use the pre-approval and have the card directed to their home.

They then will charge up thousands of dollars in your name.

The internet is another medium where criminals have gone to steal your personal and financial data. Never respond to spam or unsolicited emails. If an email looks like it has come from a legitimate source but asks you to reply with passwords or financial data, don't do it. The only place you should use a password is on the site where you are trying to log in.

Once a thief gets your basic information, there is a wide range of things he can do with it. He can fraudulently open credit accounts, withdraw money from your bank, and even establish a whole new identity under your name.

You may not be aware that any of this has taken place until a creditor comes knocking at your door.

Therefore, the last item on my list of precautions for identity theft is to get an identity theft protection system. These companies take responsibility for monitoring the various kinds of data that are often hacked to find out personal data. If you are a victim, they will make the problem right - at their own expense.
